This year we held our first ever Summer School. As it was the first time, we only held this over 2 days. It proved to be a great success.
Day 1 started with a Street Jazz lesson with Sian, after what looked like a very tiring warm-up, Sian started a very funky street jazz dance. The children were challenged with the latest arm and foot movements. The verdict was it was great fun.
Then we were joined by Jean le Clerc from the Paris Rock School, he took as through our paces with some rock + roll. Even showing us some lifts. The children left 2 and a half hours later exhausted but looking forward to day 2.
Day 2 was hosted by our singing teacher Tony Thompson. He started the day with an energetic warm up including quite a few high kicks!! (He put the kids to shame with him demonstrations). Next followed some voice training and breathing exercises. Next Tony thought he would change tack and started teaching some breakdancing. Obviously the kids thought this was great! We were certainly all amazed with his demonstrations. Next on the agenda was writing our own song. Jo thought she would make this a challenge for Tony by wanting to get the words "hot chocolate, coffee and spaghetti carbonara" into the song. It definately made for interesting lyrics. The day was ended with some games which both build confidence and increase stamina for breathing, practice for holding those long notes. All in all the Summer School proved to be very successful. We'll certainly be holding another one next year, and will be inviting Tony and Jean back as well as many other teachers of a variety of dance syles.
